The web has a plethora of social networks and social media sites these days. Most people that are involved in one are also a member of at least a few more. On today’s social web, your posts don’t have to reside in only one place. They are not walled off in one social network where none of your friends can see them.
The social web, as I see it, consists of two categories. One is “social networking” and the other is “social media“. Social networking is where your friends are, where connections can be made and where conversations can be had. Social media is where content can be made and shared. This content includes pictures, videos, and blog posts, for example. I lump blog posts into the category of social media since it is content creation.
The key to social interactions is getting as many eyes on the content that is on the social media sites (e.g. YouTube, Flickr or blogs) from the social networking sites (e.g. Twitter or Facebook). This can be accomplished by linking to the social media sites from the social networking sites. This gives the people in your social networks a chance to interact with you about what you are doing, watching or reading elsewhere on the web.
I realize that you can comment on posts that are on social media sites. But do your Twitter or Facebook friends see if you post a comment on YouTube? If the two are not linked in someway, then probably not.
The trick is to make sure that you don’t cross the streams. If you have Twitter automatically feeding Facebook and Facebook automatically feeding Twitter then you will create an infinite loop and start spamming people with duplicate posts. Getting the same post in your Twitter stream half a dozen times because someone crossed the streams is plain out offensive.
There are loads of social sites out there, therefore, the plan isn’t to describe how to link each one in detail. Instead, in the next few posts, I will describe the methods that I use to link a few of the social networks and social media sites that I use. There is most likely an uncountable number of ways to complete this task so if you have a method that works for you, then keep using it. If your looking for a solution and you haven’t yet found it, then hopefully the following few posts will help you get started. I had planned to write this all up into one post but after I hit a few thousand words I thought it would be best to break it up a bit.
The next post in this series will be revolving around YouTube. Stay tuned!
