The Missing (Social) Link: Linking Your Social Networks – Part 5 [Packrati.us, Delicious, Twitter, Google Reader]

Google Reader "send to"

I know that I was going to take a break from this series, I mean a longer break, but I’ve recently come across a new service that has changed my workflow for sharing links on social networking sites. Normally, when I see a website that I want to bookmark on Delicious, I use Delicious’s bookmarklet (via Quix). I tag and save the bookmark on Delicious and I can also send it to Twitter. Like I discussed in part 3 of this series.

Generally this works fine, however, there are times that I see a story in my Google Reader news feeds that I want to save for later on Delicious plus send out to Twitter or Facebook. Previously, I would click the “send to” link at the bottom of the post. I would then be taken out of Google Reader and sent to a Delicious page to add tags and then also send it out to Twitter. I would then have to go back to Google Reader to continue reading my news feeds. This is a bit of a disruptive process. Again, I have already described how I do all of this in part 3 of this series. On the iPhone it is even more tedious. I have to tap the link and go to the post on the originating website. I then use the Delicious bookmarklet. Finally, I need to go back to Google Reader again. A long and tedious process.

Along came my saviour in the form of a great new service, Packrati.us. It works like this, when users add a hastag to their Tweet (I use #db) then packrati.us will save that link as a bookmark and add the Tweet as a description on Delicious. Users can skip the hashtag and have packrati.us save every link from every Tweet. I post a lot of stuff to Twitter that is relevant to the moment and that I will never need to go back to, I opted for the hashtag method.

Now, my workflow is considerably smoother. If I am reading my news feed from within Google Reader all I have to do is share the item with a note and add #db at the end of that note, or as the note to save to Delicious. It is a real time saver. Additionally, if you had further hashtags to your Tweet then those will also be added as tags on Delicious. The downside to this is that if you’re a heavy tagger on Delicious then you only have 140 characters in your Tweet which doesn’t leave much room for many tags.

At an earlier point in time, I also wrote about the Facebook application called Selective Tweets. So now, when I use all of these services together, I can post a news item from within Google Reader out to Twitter (using Reader2Twitter), Facebook (via #fb hashtag) and save it to Delicious (via #db hastag). One process with multiple results.

I have found packrati.us to be a real time saver when I am trying to go through all of my feeds. Anything that streamlines any workflow in my life puts a smile on my face. Have you tried Packrati.us? Any tricks or tips that you want to share? Add them to comments below.
