The Missing (Social) Link: Linking Your Social Networks – Part 1
YouTube is an interesting social media platform. On The Official YouTube Blog, back in May of 2009, they claimed users were uploading 20 hours of video to YouTube every minute. Now, almost a year later, it is probably over 24 hours. My point is that there is no way humanly possible to watch all those videos, nor would you want to.
A vast number of the videos that you watch on YouTube have probably been suggested to you, in one way or another, by your social network. So, by linking YouTube to the social networks that you are already a member of your friends will be able to see your activity on YouTube. This activity includes when you rate a video, comment on a video, subscribe to a channel, favorite a video, or upload a video.
The process for linking YouTube to Facebook and Twitter is very simple, if you know where to look. You will need to have a YouTube account already setup and be logged in for this to work. Look in your YouTube account settings under the Activity Sharing tab. Here you will be able to choose which type of activities you want to share and where.
I use this mostly for showing people in my social networks which videos I like on YouTube. When I favorite a video, this activity is shared on Facebook and Twitter. A message is posted that I have favorited a video. There is also a link back to that video. With one click I have now posted to Facebook and Twitter, both of the social networks that I use regularly. I don’t share to Google Reader to avoid duplicate posts. The reasons for this will be explained in the next post in this series.
Within Facebook, your friends can play the video in their news feeds. YouTube videos are also playable on the iPhone, at press time, Facebook videos are not. Now, your friends can see what you have watched and then they can choose to comment about it. The same results will occur when you post videos, comment on videos or rate videos. I usually don’t push my comments on videos out to Twitter or Facebook because when I comment on a video I am usually addressing the video creator. How do you share videos in your social networks?
