Using offline promotions to get Facebook ‘Likes’ might appear to be counter intuitive since Facebook is for building an online presence. Right? Well, not exactly.
Recently, I have come across the following Facebook promotion in a few different places. All using a few different variations on this tactic. The idea is simple and something that can be implemented with just a few minutes of pre-planning.
You will need to combine this with some type of event for your organization or small business. This can be a as simple as a busy night at your restaurant, a high traffic day at your store (e.g. a large sales event) or your organization’s next fund raising endeavor. Any time that you will be able to gather a large number of your target audience in one place.
The next phase of this tactic is to have you, or someone else, wonder around the event and take pictures of your participants or guests. But before you get to click-happy, make sure to ask your guests for their permission.

It goes without saying (but I will anyways) that you’ll want to give them something in return. So, let them know that their picture is an entry into a draw. All they have to do to enter is to visit your Facebook page and then tag themselves in the picture that you just took, and that will be posted to your Facebook page soon. Again, it’s probably wise to make sure that they are still okay with having their picture taken.
The draw should be for something they want. Something better than a fridge magnet or a free roll of dental floss. Make it worth their time. This could be some kind of discount off their next purchase, a free entrée during their next visit or a gift basket full of items that appeal to your event goers. If you are a small organization, you might get a local business to donate something as a cross-promotion. The better the offer, the higher likely hood they will make the effort to tag themselves later.
An additional step is to have cards printed out beforehand with your Facebook address on it and the steps on how to tag their pictures. This makes it easier for them to remember what to do and it also gives them something tangible as a reminder to do it.
The great thing about this type of ‘Likes’ boosting tactic for social marketing is that in order for anyone to tag themselves in a photo on Facebook, they need to fist ‘Like’ the page. This activity is shown in their timeline for their ‘Friends’ to see.
The next thing they will have to do is actually tag themselves in the photos. This activity is also displayed in their Facebook activity feed. Again, this means their ‘Friends’ have a chance to see this activity.
This also works because it is a win-win situation. The event goers get entered into a draw for something they want and you gain Facebook ‘Likes’, which helps build your “Social Proof” and potential customer base.
What will hopefully happen is:
I am curious to know if you have tactics to getting Facebook ‘Likes’ for your own pages? Share your tips or tricks in the comments.
Good point but you would only need to “bypass edge rank” to get “Likes” from the “Friends” of event goers.
You will still get the “Likes” from the people tagging themselves in pictures since they must “Like” first. Also, you may “bypass edge rank” because of the amount of activity that is taking place within a page from a single user. For example “Liking” the page, then tagging photos and possibly even commenting on the photo they tagged themselves in.
You are right, there is no guarantee that “Friends” of the event goers will see this activity in their streams but there is a strong chance they will.
Thanks for your comment!
