Of the slew of social networks that I use it’s Twitter and Facebook the I use the most. I quite often have people ask me why they should use Twitter when they are already on Facebook. Most of the time my reply is simple: “You shouldn’t”.
Let me explain. Twitter is a different beast when compared to Facebook. The biggest difference is that Twitter is very open and discussions happen between people that may or may not know each other. On the other hand, Facebook is mostly closed except to the people that are allowed to see your postings. The Facebook term is “friends” and the Twitter term is “followers” both terms are very apropos.
Personally, the things that I post to Facebook are usually a bit more personal in nature and are intended for people that I actually know or have known in the past. People like past or present coworkers, past or present friends, past or present classmates, and family. For me Facebook is like an extended Rolodex. Twitter is a place for musings, observations and link sharing.
Basically, if Facebook works for you and you don’t feel the need for another social network then forget Twitter. If you are interested in getting involved in conversations about what is going on in the world or if you want to know what’s happening on the web then check out Twitter. Additionally, if you only want to catch up with past acquaintances, friends, or family then Facebook is your beast.
